Why is it that things that are transported by boat are called CARGO.......while things being transported by car are called SHIPMENTS?
Answer
I believe the true definition is. Shipments are goods or cargo that is shipped together.

While cargo is the goods that are being carried. So shipment is the actually transportation of the freight, and cargo is just the items themselves.
Answer2
It is, or could possibly be, because things that are transported by car are "MENT" ('meant') to be transported by "SHIP"... Similarly, things that are transported by ship, should "GO" ('go') to be transported by "CAR"...

If by SHIP + MENT = "(It) GOes (by) CAR"..
If by CAR + GO = "(It) MEaNT (by) SHIP"..

>>> SHIP + MENT = CAR + GO <<<
>>> GO + CAR = MENT + SHIP <<<

Another puzzling and mind-boggling question you might ask, could be this:
*** Why is it that ships, cars, planes, and trains are always said to "transport" things?? (Mail, imports/exports, people, etc. ...) Would it be illogical to use a verb such as "carry", "move", or "deliver", in place of "transport"?? ***
It is just a questionable thought, in relation to your question.
Answer3
I feel like you could switch them around and no one would think twice about it. A shipment is something that is being delivered, cargo is just something that you are carrying. Subtle changes in the context.
Answer4
I would only believe its done that way so there is no "pun" intended while you say a sentence invloving the two facts. If you said Im driving on my driveway or im on a ship shipping shipments then it becomes a tounge twister lol..
Answer5
lol idk and the other answer that says i park in the driveway and drive on the perkway got that off the suite life of zack and cody:)
Answer6
becz the car went (the go part) so the ship had to take its place!!!!!!!!

when the ship took the car's place, the car got pissed and took shipments!
Answer7
after u take out those things from boat u have to put them in Car/{or something like that}
so CARGO

and if u bing those from car that u have to take them with so SHIPMENTS
Answer8
uh,uh, pick me. Alright, Yeah and why do we drive on a parkway, and park on a drive way?
Answer9
Im still trying to figure out why I park in my driveway and drive on the parkway??
Answer10
